In 2006, the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi became the first and only University Hospital in Pakistan to be awarded by the Joint Commission International (JCI); an American accreditation that is considered the gold standard in global healthcare. The Hospital is also ISO 9001:2008 certified.
Over the last 10 years, the landscape of the healthcare industry has evolved; and so have the demands of patients. Hence, the Aga Khan University Hospital has adopted the hub-and-spoke model. Whereby, the Aga Khan University Hospital has introduced an integrated health system of Smaller Hospitals in Garden, Karimabad, Kharadar and Hyderabad, Medical Centres including Clifton Medical Services and Clinical Laboratory/ collection points all over Pakistan. The goal is to make quality Healthcare conveniently accessible to people living in different geographies, from all walks of life.
In keeping with the principle of access to all, robust Welfare assistance and Zakat programs are available to those patients who qualify for financial assistance.
More recently, the hospital has taken the industry lead in reorganizing itself in a service line structure, bringing consultant physicians, surgeons, nurses and administrators together within each specialty to offer enhanced patient-centric care. The approach at AKUH is one which understands that the human body is much more than just the heart or the kidney or the brain. When one organ is damaged or affected by a sickness, often other organs are affected as well. This holistic approach requires having many specialty hospitals within one large hospital, all under one roof, with professionals from all different specialty areas working together. Through this set up, AKUH enables a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment that results in a continuum of quality care for patients.
